Central College's Mills Gallery features Amy Haney Exhibit ''Aviate''

Central College welcomes the works of Amy Haney, an artist specializing in printmaking. Haney's exhibit titled "Aviate" will open Monday, March 4, and be open to the public through Friday, April 12, in the Mills Gallery.

A reception for the artist will be held in the Mills Gallery from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 11. The Mills Gallery, Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts on Central's campus, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Brian Roberts, professor of art and 1992 Central graduate, curated the exhibit.
"I incorporate birds, insects and animals into my work. I enjoy the personalities that come across with their postures, gestures, colors and shapes," Haney says. "Working in various formats and printmaking processes allows me to explore multiple ways of representing my subject matter. Woodcuts visually lend themselves toward commanding and bold images, while intaglio looks delicate and, at times, intimate."

Over the last few years, Haney has been creating new concepts of work by revisiting and recycling her older pieces. Haney says it's been liberating to step away from the tighter constraints found in traditional printmaking.

She finds a form of meditation when creating her art and enjoys connecting herself and others to each piece.
"I find birds to be an interesting subject matter because everyone has a connection to them in nature, as an icon or spiritually," Haney says.
With work displayed in the San Francisco Bay area, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, Microsoft Corporation and the University of Wyoming Art Museum, Haney has exhibited her art all over the country. She is represented at Anderson O'Brien Fine Art in Omaha, Nebraska.

Haney earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ringling College of Art, a Master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute and a master's degree in art history from Prescott College. She has experience teaching printmaking and watercolor in the Omaha Metropolitan area.
