Central College's Mills Gallery welcomes the works of the Cedar River Artisans, a consortium of seven artists from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The group's exhibit, titled "Conversations," is on display in Lubbers Center until Friday, Oct. 23.
Members of the group include Susan Coleman, Robert Fox, Casey Kasparek, Lou Kline, Nancy Lindsay, John-Thomas Richard and John Schwartzkopf. They work with a wide variety of mediums, including oil paint, photography, ceramics and woodworking.
The public is invited to a reception for the artists from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, in the Mills Gallery. The Mills Gallery, located in Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts on Central's campus, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
"Our work presented in 'Conversations' explores the quiet and complex exchanges that happen between people, places, memories and ideas," states the Cedar River Artisans. "Through our mediums, we invite viewers to consider what is both spoken and unspoken, to create a space for connection, reflection and dialogue."
Coleman, Kasparek, Kline, Fox and Lindsay focus on capturing landscapes and nature in their work. Richard and Schwartzkopf focus on crafting sculptures in ceramics and woodworking.
"Drawing and painting from landscape encourages me to seek out visual patterns and anomalies, subtlety and drama," Coleman explains. "It reminds me to pay attention and notice the beauty and strangeness in the everyday."
Brian Roberts, professor of art and 1992 Central graduate, curated the exhibit.
