Archaeology at Iowaville: an Ioway Tribe Village from 1765-1825
In 2010, archeological excavations occurred at a large village site and home of the famous Ioway leader, Mahaska (White Cloud). The village lies along the bank of the Des Moines River, a rich environment where tribal members harvested a wide variety of natural resources, including coal, clay, bear, elk, swan, hazelnuts, and plums, to name only a few items found at the site. With a peak population of about 1,000, the village would have housed more people than St. Louis in 1800. Today, archeological work reveals significant traces of the past at a site now used as a farm field. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers archeologist Cindy Peterson will provide a brief history of the site and discuss archeological finds there. At 1pm, Lake Red Rock Visitor Center.
Free of charge. Activities may be cancelled if raining. For more information, contact the Corps of Engineers office at (641) 828-7522 or via email at lakeredrock@usace.army.mil
