The Well hosts "Helping that Helps" Workshop
The Well and World Renew are co-hosting a “Helping that Helps” workshop, exploring ways to alleviate poverty while helping, rather than unknowingly harming, people who live in poverty. In this interactive workshop, attendees will hear stories from practitioners, best practices from each other, and be inspired to confidently partner both locally and globally in a way that provides hope instead of unintended harm. Facilitators will talk through some of the helping-without-hurting tensions using concepts from the book When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor and Yourself. Facilitators will also illustrate how food banks, deacon funds, short-term service trips, and other outreach activities can be more effective and meaningful. From 7-9pm on the second floor Learning Center of The Well, located at 419 E Oskaloosa Street (enter the east door and follow the signs). This event is free and light snacks and beverages will be provided. Please call 641-621-0164 ext 706 or sign up online here to reserve a spot, as space is limited.
