The Future of Retail: Defining the New Terrain Simulcast

Laura authored four books about successful companies, including “On Target: How the World’s Hottest Retailer Hit a Bull’s-eye” (John Wiley & Sons); and the histories of Family Dollar Stores, Humana, and CBRE (Fenwick Publishing). She has created thought leadership and white papers for numerous real estate firms, and spoken professionally to builders, developers, investors and senior retail leaders.
In 2017, 26 major retailers with liabilities of at least $50 million filed for bankruptcy, and nearly 7,000 stores closed. In Iowa, we are not immune. With these closures, a significant amount of square feet of big-box retail will become available.
There’s a risk that these closures will spark a domino effect, as many leases for secondary stores include provisions to renegotiate or terminate their contracts if the mall anchor shuts its doors.
How can retailers, owners and investors can navigate the current disruption in the industry and find success in a swiftly shifting environment.
